Summary:
Water in power transformer is a detrimental factor that speeds up the aging process of the transformer and decreases the dielectric strength of insulation. For this reason, an early detection and control of excessive water content is a key task in the life management of transformers. In this paper at first an introduction to the behaviour of water is given with all the basic definitions. Then traditional and modern measurement methods of water content are presented and especial attention is given to the application of dielectric response measurements as tool that overcomes the drawbacks of traditional methods.
